Jerome K Jerome was my farther favorite author. He particularly enjoyed “Three Men in a Boat”. He was also a doctor and I fancy he, like I, particularly liked the section where the narrator goes through the medical dictionary. Like the experience of every medical student, he is convinced he has each and every ailment he reads about.
I’ve often though hypochondria and stupidity are a bad combination.
Jerome K. Jerome doesn’t comment on the hypochondriacs. But he does express his endearment to the intellectually challenged in one of his famous, if scurrilous quotes.
“It is so pleasant to come across people more stupid than ourselves. We love them at once for being so.”

Mrs. M.’s name was on my list. It made me a little nervous. She’d seen both of my new partners - with one, the whole thing had finished up in fraught scene with her demanding prescription for methadone and being refused, and the whole thing taking up ¾ of an hour and spilling out of the exam room and into the hall way - which of course when you have a 15 minute appointment causes stress in itself (time pressure is the constant and most stressful part of the job if you ask me). Drug rep. Kennedy was in the other day and we were shooting the breeze.
One of the banes of our lives - or one of the high points, it depends how you look at it - is visits from drug reps.
They come in all shapes and sizes - from old guys who are grossly over assertive and you cringe when you see them in the waiting room, to some extremely attractive young ladies who have developed a very enticing “come hither” manner. Read the rest of this post here »
